Engineeringis not magic.

We teach Secondary 1–6 students in Hong Kong to design, build and test real engineering — with a former NASA engineer in the room.

A small lab.
Real engineering.

BAD PIG LABS is a small engineering education lab in Hong Kong. We design and teach programmes for secondary students in schools, NGOs and after-school studios.

Every programme is built and led by Billy Hau, a former NASA engineer — not delivered from a box. Students work with the same tools and constraints as practising engineers: CAD, microcontrollers, simulation, test data, deadlines, and a public demo at the end.

Test, measure, iterate. The lab is a method, not a room.

Programmes

Four disciplines. Four formats. Every one ends with something that works.

Who we work with

Schools

In-school STEM days, term-long electives and competition teams. We bring the equipment, the safety plan and the assessment. You provide the room and the students.

NGOs

Funded cohorts and outreach programmes with clear outcomes, attendance records and a final showcase your funder can visit.

Parents

After-school courses at M21 in Aberdeen, plus 1:1 project mentorship for students building a portfolio, a competition entry or a university application.

How a programme runs

Brief

We start with your cohort, timetable and budget. You get a written outline with session plans, tools and outcomes before anything is booked.

Build

Students work in small teams on a real brief. Every session produces a physical or digital artefact, not a worksheet.

Test

Teams test against constraints — mass, budget, lift, latency, frame rate — and document what failed and why.

Show

The programme ends with a working demo to teachers, parents or funders, and a record of each student’s contribution.

Billy Hau

Founder · Lead instructor · Course developer

Billy builds the curriculum and teaches most of it himself. He spent his engineering career at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, working on lunar space station power systems and deep-space mining robotics. He holds an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Lehigh University and an M.S. in Computer Science (AI) from Georgia Tech.

The name? When Billy disappears into a project, he misses texts. His girlfriend calls him 衰豬. It stuck.

Questions

What ages do you teach?

Secondary 1–6. Most courses are built for S2–S6; a few introductory workshops work from S1. We adjust the maths and pace for your group.

Can you run a programme at our school?

Yes. We bring the equipment and run in your classroom, lab or hall. A standard STEM day needs a room with power, tables and about 60–90 minutes per group.

Do you teach in English or Chinese?

Both. Lessons can run in English, Cantonese or a mix, and written materials are available in English and Traditional Chinese.

What do students actually take home?

A working prototype or project file, a build log, and a demo they can explain. Longer courses end with a portfolio piece for school or university applications.

How much does a programme cost?

It depends on format, number of sessions and location. Send us the cohort size and dates and we will quote within a week.

Tell us the cohort, dates and budget. We will send a programme outline within a week.
