Billy Hau

I design it. I teach it.
Billy Hau is the founder of BAD PIG LABS. He spent his engineering career at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, working on lunar space station power systems and deep-space mining robotics. He was a Principal Investigator on simulation-to-physical transfer for robotic navigation, and developed an autonomous power controller for a lunar space station concept.
He holds an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Lehigh University and an M.S. in Computer Science (AI) from Georgia Tech. He teaches at secondary schools, NGOs and HKU SPACE across Hong Kong, and has worked with more than 20 schools and 300 students.

What I believe
Three principles behind every programme.
Engineering is a habit.
You learn it by finishing things: drawing, building, testing, breaking, revising. We make students do all five.
Constraints are the curriculum.
Mass, budget, time, gravity. A project with no constraints is a craft activity. A project with constraints is engineering.
Finish something.
A working demo is worth more than a perfect plan. Every programme ends with something that runs, moves or plays.

Why “Bad Pig”?
When Billy gets deep into a project, he sometimes misses his girlfriend’s texts. She calls him 衰豬 — “bad pig”. The name stuck.
It is a useful reminder that engineering is not a personality. It is what you do when you are distracted, behind schedule and still have to make the thing work.
Tell us the cohort, dates and budget. We will send a programme outline within a week.
